Sacramental Preparation

Baptismal Preparation / Marriage Preparation / R.C.I.A.

Baptismal Preparation

Baptism is the sign for Sacrament of Welcome into the Catholic community. It is the first of three essential Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.

Baptism requires a learning process by the parent(s) who are the first educators of their children in the ways of the faith. Baptism is a lifelong process, not an instant transformation. We prepare for the celebration with new clothes, water to help us grow, a candle to light the way, oil for strength and companions for the journey.

Parents are encouraged to contact the St. Dunstan's Parish office in advance to receive an information handout about Baptism. The informal class typically lasts just one hour. After introductions, a video is shown and a brief history of baptism is presented. The role and selection of Godparents is reviewed, followed by a discussion on growth in faith. Details about the ceremony in St. Dunstan’s are explained and questions are answered.

The St. Dunstan's baptism preparatory class is usually held the first Thursday of each month at the Monsignor Boyd Family Centre. The St. Dunstan's Catholic Formation Office (in the Monsignor Boyd Family Centre) has resource videos and other information on Baptism. Single parents, babies and Godparents are all welcome! (Bring a close friend or relative if you prefer). A date and time for the Baptism are arranged at this meeting or by calling the parish office (444-6001).

Marriage Preparation

Marriage preparation is a requirement for all couples who plan to be married. While St. Dunstan’s offers no marriage preparation course itself, it participates in two preparatory programmes held in Fredericton.

  • St. Theresa’s Parish Marriage Preparation Course, usually held around the end of April each year;
  • The programmes offered by the Fredericton Institute for Christian Studies. The Institute offers about five or six weekend sessions throughout the year for those preparing to marry. Call the Parish Office at 444-6001 for dates.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.)

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) are religious education sessions which run from September to May for new candidates who wish to join the Roman Catholic faith. A team of five lay persons and the pastor, Father White, meet weekly between September and May with the candidates and their sponsors. The evenings are informal and relaxed. The agenda includes prayer, lesson study, a question and answer session, and a refreshment break.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the Catholic community, or require more information please call the MBFC at 444-6001.
